"John Carlini - The Game's Afoot" - Master guitarist and composer John Carlini, regarded as one of the architects of New Acoustic and Dawg music, presents his working quartet, eight original compositions ranging in style from bluegrass-bebop to ballads and blues, (including a revisit of his standard "Mugavero"), plus a modern view of the traditional "Wayfaring Stranger". Banjo legend Pat Cloud appears on five of the tracks, completing the "jazz played on bluegrass instruments" motif.  Liner notes by Tony Rice.

“Dan Crary – Guitar.”  Our buddy Dan turns the pups loose on this one.  With boosts from such greats as Byron Berline (fiddle), Bela Fleck (banjo) and Sam Bush (mandolin), Dan turns out clean, robust renditions of a varietal mix of tunes.  We particularly like the Crary-penned “Sweet Laree” and “Memories of Mozart.”

“Dawg 90,” David Grisman.  With help from Mark O’Connor on fiddle and our pal John Carlini on guitar, David shows why so many have been taken with the genre he originated: “Dawg” music.

“Dawganova,” The David Grisman Quintet.  David and the boys’ treatment of “Manha de Carnaval” and “Nature Boy” sets the standard for beautifully recorded acoustic jazz.  A great disc for breaking someone gently into jazz.

“Dawg Duos,” David Grisman, et al.  Clean and unencumbered treatments of an eclectic mix of tunes featuring our buddy David with Bela Fleck (banjo), Edgar Meyer (acoustic bass), Julian Lage (guitar), and a host of others.

“Distant Faces,” Steve Spurgin.  We’re not sure which is better, Steve’s resonant, captivating voice or the stories he tells through his songs.  The two together are spellbinding.

“I’m Beginning To See The Light,” Martin Taylor and David Grisman.  Working with Jim Kerwin (acoustic bass) and George March (drums), Messrs. Taylor (guitar) and Grisman (mandolin) tear up the title track and other jazz gems (e.g., Autumn Leaves, Cheek to Cheek, and East of the Sun).  Heck, the liner notes alone justify the low, low cost of this recording.

“Jammed If I Do,” Dan Crary.  A great assemblage of tunes featuring master flatpicker Dan Crary with many of our other favorites, including Norman Blake, Beppe Gambetta and Tony Rice.

“So What,” Jerry Garcia and David Grisman.  Just imagine sitting in a room with these two music legends --- loose, relaxed and enjoying some great musical interplay on tunes by Miles Davis and Milt Jackson.  A great chance to hear Jerry’s guitar in an intimate setting.

“Synergia,” Bette Gambetta and Dan Crary.  Picture an Italian and an American – both fabulous guitarists – doing duet concerts all through Europe.  Pick up this disc, and you can be right there in the audience.  Exciting, tasteful renditions of some classic tunes, with some interesting musical surprises as well (e.g., “Mozart In Hell.”)

“Take Five,” 2 For Brazil. Greg Fishman (tenor saxophone, flute) and Paulinho Garcia (acoustic guitar, vocals) have been taking the world by storm as "Two For Brazil". Paulinho's always contextual guitar and velvet voice transport the listener to serene beaches and glowing sunsets. Add Greg's tasteful backup and masterful solos and you've got yourself a fine evening with this recording.

“Thunderation,” Dan Crary.  We really dig this grouping of Dan’s tunes, particularly “Andante In Steel” and the recording’s namesake “Thunderation.”  A must for any guitar player’s collection.

“The Guitar Artistry of Enrique Coria.”  Like romantic solo guitar?  Then this one is for you.  Enrique plays ‘em the way they were meant to be played.  His graceful touch on these wonderful Latin tunes will enhance that quiet evening in front of the fireplace.  Be sure you close the curtains!

“Tone Poems II,” David Grisman and Martin Taylor.  David always knocks us out.  Team him up with the amazing Martin Taylor on guitar, and you’ve really got somethin'. This one is an absolute “must” for any fan of acoustic jazz.

“Tumbleweed Town,” Steve Spurgin.  In this, his most recent release, Steve gives us more of his great tunes and terrific voice.  This guy is a “singer’s singer,” and he writes some of the best tunes we’ve ever heard.

“Two For Brazil Plays the Standards," In this wonderfully recorded disc Greg and Paulinho raise the bar on tunes like Embraceable You, Indian Summer and Angel Eyes. We think Greg plays "more like Stan Getz than Stan Getz" and Paulinho's Brazilian tinged vocals provide a new introduction to this collection of classics.
